EIGRPv6 is the most recent version of Cisco's EIGRP routing protocol and is designed to support IPv6 dynamic routing.

EIGRPv6 has much in common with EIGRP for IPv4, but significant differences exist:

  • EIGRPv6 advertises networks based on interface commands, rather then routing process network commands.
  • When EIGRPv6 is first configured on an interface, the EIGRPv6 process is created, but is initially in the shutdown state. A no shutdown command must be issued in router config mode before it will become active.
  • A router ID must be configured before EIGRPv6 will start.
  • Passive interfaces configured in the routing process only, not on interfaces.
  • Route maps that call distribute lists are not supported for route filtering, only the distribute-list prefix-list command will work.
  • No auto-summary.

Commands

  • ipv6 eigrp asn (interface) - activates v6EIGRP on an interface
  • ipv6 router eigrp asn - enter global config mode for EIGRP
